Now and then

History of the Leiner's boutique hotel

How it all began and how we came to specialize entirely in families with babies and children.

How our family hotel was created

The beginnings

The Leiner's family hotel was built at the end of the 1920s by Pauline Bierprigl, the grandmother of Toni Leiner and great-grandmother of Monika Leiner-Pieri. Pauline Bierprigl initially ran three mountain huts on the Zugspitze with her husband Martin (known as "Zugspitz-Martl"). The Münchner Haus, the Knorrhütte and the Reintalangerhütte. At that time, there were no cable cars on the Zugspitze and food and all other necessary items had to be carried up the mountain by mules.

Martin Bierprigl died suddenly in 1911, one year after the birth of their daughter Paula. Pauline now had to manage three huts by herself and raise her daughter alone.

The German Alpine Association declared that a woman was not allowed to manage three huts alone. She therefore kept the Knorrhütte, which received the most mountaineering guests at that time. Yet this wasn’t enough for Pauline, so she started building a hotel in the valley

Paula Bierprigl married Willi Leiner, an extreme mountaineer from Munich who had spent a lot of time at the Knorrhütte. They together managed the Knorrhütte, while down in the valley Pauline Bierprigl transformed the hotel into a flourishing business with many wealthy regular guests. At that time, the hotel was called “Hospiz".

At the start of war, Willi Leiner was conscripted, the mountain huts were closed and moved back to the valley with their sons Toni and Peter. The hotel was also closed and used to house children who were evacuated during the war. After the war, it was used to accommodate families whose homes had been occupied by the Americans.

Tourists slowly started returning to the hotel in the years 1948/49. Paula and Willi Leiner, who had returned from captivity as a prisoner of war, now ran the hotel together and Willi Leiner gave it the name "Hotel Leiner". This was followed by conversions and expansions.

Toni Leiner, their son, trained to become a chef in Munich, attended the hotel management school in Lucerne and worked in various hotels in Germany and abroad.

Toni married and together with his wife Lisa invested all his efforts in the hotel. Further conversions and modernisation measures followed.

Their daughter Monika Leiner-Pieri joined the family business. She was always on the lookout for areas of interest for the Hotel Leiner. They first considered becoming a venue for conferences and seminars. Then their experiences with their own patchwork family gave rise to the notion of a hotel for families with children. This was initially followed by the construction of an adventure playground and the transformation of part of the restaurant into a playroom. It started with a half-day childcare and three apartments and four family rooms. The next step was joining Kinderland Bayern, followed in 2007 by being accepted as part of Familotel (the withdrawal took place in 2017).

Over time a youth room was built, the number of child-minders was increased to three full-time employees, and childcare became available 7 days a week. We became a baby hotel and started offering baby care of at least 30 hours per week for children from age 3 months. In 2009, we were awarded 2nd prize in the innovation competition organised by Garmisch-Partenkirchen Tourism for tourism offers.

2011

Everything you need

In 2011, we changed our offer to “all-round care” and now offer all inclusive non-alcoholic packages. After improving our software, we also created in this year a plan to adapt our hardware. We wanted more family apartments, a large childcare with plenty of space to let off steam and play. A new indoor pool with a baby pool seemed essential. Parents should be able to enjoy the pleasure of a wellness area.

2015

Extensive expansion of the Leiner's

Many new things in 2015 came along. We expanded our family hotel from its very foundations. The new Leiner's was born. Plenty of space for children to play and let off steam, numerous places for adults to withdraw & perfect feel-good rooms and apartments for the whole family. A stylish indoor pool with a baby pool and new wellness area.

New design since January 2016

The new Leiner's

December 2015

On December 19, 2015, the time had finally come, and we opened the new "Leiner's" with all our strength and the help of our family and the entire team. Not everything was completely finished yet, and the first guests had to deal with some limitations, but by the end of January 2016, we were able to finalize everything, including the entire second floor.

April 2016

In April 2016, it was time for the outdoor area: The facade and balconies were completely renovated. However, our garden was the most important aspect. We created hills that would loosen up the garden in the summer and turn into wonderful "sledge bumps" in the winter, laid down meters of rolled lawn, and installed new play equipment. From now on, our guests are welcomed by a beautiful garden that invites them to play, relax, and enjoy.

May 2017

We furnished our two small apartments "Anton" with new furniture and also carried out renovations here.

Spring 2018

We have introduced a new room category: Two apartments called "Federvieh" have been created in the main building, lovingly designed by our interior designer Ann-Christin in accordance with our motto "fantastically familiar," featuring many special details.

2020-2021

The redesign of the family areas and parts of the restaurant has been completed.

2022

Renovation and redesign of the apartments Sun, Moon, and Stars, Explorer, Coffee Circle, and Rainbow. At the end of 2022, the two smaller rooms at the beginning of the restaurant were redesigned.

For the future, we have quite a lot in store. We can promise you that we certainly won't run out of ideas and plans. So just let yourselves be surprised and enchanted by us anew each time.

Pack your bags and let's go!
Your fantastic family holiday is waiting!
